Projects

A project is the foundation of (nearly) every interaction with PERSEUS.

A PERSEUS project

  • is the largest, usually time-limited unit in which computing time can be assigned to a responsible person
  • is requested by someone or set up manually by the HPC center
  • has a limited contingent of HPC resources, which should not normally be exceeded
  • (usually) has at least one associated compute project, which may be used to bill consumption
  • undergoes certain workflows, which can be expressed as a state machine

Please note that PERSEUS projects and compute projects are not the same. Every compute project has to be included within a PERSEUS project and cannot exist on its own.

Currently, a project can hold the following information:

  • Abbreviation: Often used as an internal identifier
  • Title: The project’s title, provided by the users (principal investigator / person of contact)
  • Description: The project’s description, provided by the users (principal investigator / person of contact)
  • Type: Categorization of the project, i.e. small / normal / large
  • Start: Start of the project
  • End: End of the project
  • Call: Some HPC centers divide compute time proposals into calls, i.e. 2025-03
  • Source: Where this project came from and corresponding metadata
  • Affiliation: The organization (and a corresponding institute) associated with the project
  • Principal Investigator (PI): The responsible person for a project
  • Person of Contact (PC): The person who serves as contact for the HPC center — can, but doesn’t have to be, the same person as the PI
  • Members: A list of people who are considered users for this project and therefore have access to it, usually employees or co-workers of the PI
  • Scientific Fields: A list of scientific disciplines that apply to the project
  • Requested resources: The amount of HPC resources a user requested for this project
  • Granted resources: The amount of HPC resources that was granted by the center (or other entities involved)
  • Requested Limits: Limits a user requested for the project
  • Granted Limits: Limits the HPC center granted for the project
  • Compute Projects: A list of compute projects associated with this project
  • Publications: A list of scientific publications associated with this project
  • Data Deletion Periods: When which data should be deleted from this project
  • Active: Whether the project is currently active or not
  • Custom Fields: Additional data provided by the HPC center
  • State Machine: Which states the project has and in which order they have to be worked on
